Ludwig Güttler, distinguished trumpeter and conductor, founded the Virtuosi Saxoniae in 1985. The members came primarily from the Dresden Staatskapelle, one of the world’s oldest orchestras.Since the group’s foundation, the ensemble has remained true to its historical antecedents, presenting works of 18th century European music the way that they were heard in the chapel and theatre of the Court of Saxony. The thirtieth anniversary of this spectacular ensemble has incited the Berlin Classics label to release a Ludwig Güttler edition, bringing together the entire series of recordings that Güttler made in the years following the fall of the Berlin wall. This 25 CD box is ideally suited to all who like their collections compact and comprehensive. The historical music of Dresden understandably provides the core repertoire of this set. Composers such as Telemann, Vivaldi, Zelenka, Bach, and many more who played an important role in the musical life of Dresden are displayed on this recording with virtuosic splendor and artistic finery.
