Morton Feldman described the score as his "canvas." Amongst his most important influences were abstract painters, and his spectacular piece Rothko Chapel was named for the Houston, TX chapel built to house his friend Mark Rothko's site-specific paintings. The musicians negotiate the subtle, glowing textures of Feldman's planes of sound, and augment the program with works by Cage and Satie.
